iPhone 4.0 Keynote

Hey guys, this is Maid On On with an overview of the latest Apple keynote in 2010.

So, in the keynote, Steve Jobs talked about mainly the iPhone OS 4.0 firmware, but also a bit about the iPad briefly. I started out going over iBooks, stuff like that. Then he went over how when the iPad launched, there were over a million apps on the App Store. Then, like today, when he gave this keynote, there were 3.5 million. Um, and so that's all he went over about the iPad. It's kind of the sales. He said stuff like how many iPads they sold so far. A couple hundred thousand, I think it's 400,000.

Um, after that, he started going into the iPhone 4.0 firmware. So, this firmware has for developers over 1,500 new APIs. Most of them, I assume, are for multitasking and a couple other things. Um, the multitasking was the API I saw, and I might want to be able to use that for some of our apps coming out for Jitti in the future. We're going to have an iPad app out in a couple of days, hopefully, that will also be quite useful.

Um, so back to the firmware, there's also multitasking for the user and for the developer. So, the developer can code multitasking, so backgrounding for his app. But a user can also keep one app open and switch to another app by holding the home button or pressing it twice and flicking on the dock that comes up on the bottom. Um, but the API sort of things for the developers are background audio, voice over IP, background location, push notifications which are the same, except now they're hosted locally.

So that's, uh, it's more, it's better because you don't need a network to use them. You got task completion, which means if something's uploading a photo and you close it, it'll keep on running until it's done uploading a photo. And there's also fast app switching, which is like the user, you know, switches apps.

Um, another thing I'll say is developers got seeded this OS, but they got seeded a version that didn't have the features that they would need to develop their new app. So my iPhone runs 4.0 now, but it's only the development version of 4.0, if you can see there. So, I don't have multitasking, like all the features of multitasking. I also don't have a couple other things. I do have folders on my home screen. I'll show you that at the end of this video.

And so speaking of that, another thing is folders on the home screen. It's good for organization. You can name your folder, um, and that's really cool. Um, they also went over, there's going to be an iBook reader for the iPhone. I don't understand why they couldn't do that for 3.0 or even 2.0, but I guess it's a sales thing.

Um, they enhance the email experience. Um, just show you this real quick. Here's what my main email page looked like, or does look like now. Before it looked different, so they improved that. I'm not sure how well that's going to work out. Um, it doesn't really seem to improve my email experience, but whatever.

Then Apple also bought a company that puts ads on iPhone apps. Um, I forget what they're called; it's kind of a funny name. And now they're calling it iAd, and iAds are driven on HTML 5. He demonstrated a couple of ads. I'm not a big fan of ads in general, so I'm sure there are going to be scripts out there that you can install on a jailbroken iPhone to get rid of ads. Um, but it is good for sales, so, you know, maybe I'd keep those.

Um, there's the Game Center because there were too many games on the App Store, so they made a separate app to browse games. In my opinion, this is bad because if someone's like on the money-making developer point of view, because if someone's searching for a game, you might want them to find your app even if it doesn't happen to be a game. They might like it anyway, but now if they're searching for a game, only games come up, or only apps come up depending on what app they're using. So, that's kind of annoying. I mean, it's good from the user standpoint, but it's bad from the developer standpoint. So as both, I have to say, I'm kind of neutral about that.

And so that's pretty much all the features they've added to 4.0. There are a few other minor ones that I've, um, that elude me because I've been focusing on these. Now, I'll demonstrate for folders, so let me just get it set up on my iPhone here. The idea of folders is you can drag two apps into each other and you can create a folder. Then you can drag more apps into that, and that creates a bigger folder.

So, let me just demonstrate it with two apps here: Game Store and Contacts. So here we go, I'm going to drag Contacts, just pick it up, drag it into Game Store. Now it'll become one, and it'll ask me to name it. I'll call it "stuff." I don't want, you know, I'll just call it "useless" for sure because I don't want either of these since other apps should be doing them. Um, and now if I stop tapping my home screen, you can see there's a useless folder. When I tap it, it doesn't open in a new home screen; it opens right there, and I can click one of the things there. I can also drag things in here; I can drag them any way. If you tap somewhere else, it goes away. That's kind of self-explanatory.

So that is folders on the home screen on the iPhone 4.0. So anyway, this is a brief overview of the Apple keynote. For more, you can actually watch the video or check out Mac Rumors. Anyway, thanks for watching, Mac kids! One subscribe and goodbye.
