Our Improved Website + miRSS for Mac
Hey guys, this is Ma Headson on with a video on two things. The first thing I'm going to be showing you is, uh, upgrades we've made to our website, and the second thing I'm going to be showing you is a new Mac app that we've made.
But first, I'm going to show you the improvements we've made to our website. So, as you may know, a couple of days ago our website was hacked, and I took the homepage down. It was actually pretty good timing for this because I'm just about to move hosters to our website, and I just did that. We're on a completely different hoster. The DNS is still registered by the same company, but the hosting is done by a different company.
Um, I improved many security holes in our PHP code. A couple of people were asking me about that, and, um, yeah. I added a whole new news system, so I'm going to be showing you the news system. As you know, on our homepage there are these little, uh, news flashes, and now they're the latest articles basically.
So, just letting you know that you can go to our news page, and it's much, much easier for us to post news articles here. So, you'll be seeing a lot of news articles posted here, and due to that we made our RSS feed work properly. You can go here, and this is the source code to our RSS feed. Just use any RSS reader for that, and that's really cool.
So, we've got the whole news thing set up. You can go to our news page at any time. And yeah, we've also fixed spelling errors. We fixed a few glitches, you know; we fixed the account system, so it's a slightly more secure thing.
Uh, so we've set it all up. We've done a lot of changes, and it's really great. Alright, that's just the first thing I wanted to show you was our website.
The second thing I want to show you is the RSS app that we have made for Mac. So, we made a really cool app called My RSS. You can download it from our site just by going to downloads, Mac apps, and just clicking that.
And it'll download. Once it's downloaded, just drag it to your apps folder, open it from your apps folder, and you'll see it open up here. Um, so basically since we've gotten our RSS feed up here and running, you'll see that it will automatically add our RSS feed to the app when you open it up.
And you'll see all the new articles will have a blackout title, but I've read all of these, so obviously they're all gray. Um, so I'll add another RSS feed just to demonstrate this.
Uh, it's pretty, pretty easy to add; just click add, grab a URL. These are some test URLs, and hit enter, and you'll see it'll load that feed in. And there we go, it's gotten the title, and next to it you'll see the number of articles unread if there are any.
Um, so there are 20 articles in this that we haven't read. You can just click one to mark it as read, and as you'll see, they're now 19 read. You can use the arrow keys to navigate, double click as I just did there to open up in your browser. I'll double click another one to show you guys.
Um, and yeah, so that's pretty cool. You can use it to read RSS, and, uh, it's pretty awesome. So, that's basically the RSS support.
Uh, I'll just demonstrate we have it also working with YouTube channels. This is how you view the RSS of your YouTube channel; just paste in that magic URL that Google's made, and here it'll show up, and these are all our YouTube videos that we've posted. Pretty cool. Pretty awesome.
Alright, so that is pretty much the, um, the RSS app so far. This is just a beta. We're going to be making bug fixes and all that stuff, add more support to everything, and you'll see that coming soon.
Uh, I'll make another video to keep you guys posted, but anyway that's basically the app—the actual app. Now this app, since it's so great, we decided, well, we'll make Automator support and Apple Script support.
So, to demonstrate this, I'll just open up Automator, and I'll show you a few Automator actions that we've added. So, once you open the app from your applications folder, there should be, uh, four or five Automator actions added to your Automator.
So, you'll see, uh, you can get the number of unread posts. Right now there are about 47 plus 18—whatever that is. Um, and I'll have utilities, view results, and I'll run this, and it'll say there were, you know, 65 unread posts or something like that.
So, that's pretty simple. You can also use it to get information about, um, channels. So, I'll list the channels, get their names, and then view results, and this will give me all the channels that have more than one unread article.
So, it should give me these two, but not the Mac HS 101 RSS feed because there are no unread articles in that. So, it's pretty cool. You can make it also show channels that aren't loaded, you know, do all this stuff.
So, we have a couple Automator actions. Um, that's pretty self-explanatory, pretty easy to figure out. Alright, so that's Automator support.
Another cool feature that we've added to this is Apple Script support. So, in order to use Apple Script, I'll just open up a blank Apple Script document. You can just do things like application My RSS, and tell—alright, and here's where you write your code for it.
So, I'll set count n to feed count, and I'll say display dialogue. There are count and feeds buttons. Okay. Alright, if you run this, it'll bring up a little dialogue. It says there are three feeds, and that's the case.
Um, you could also do, um, tons of other stuff. I can't—I don't have time to show you all of this, but you can deal with individual feeds. You can add feeds. I'll have a link to a demo Apple Script that can do a lot of this stuff in the description.
Um, but anyway, yeah, that's pretty much, uh, Apple Script. Just it has lots more support, but I can't really show it to you right now.
But anyway, uh, that's two things—two major things that we've come out with: our website and this app. So anyway, thanks for watching, my kids. One, subscribe, and bye.
